How to bill loose items with weighing-scale barcodes
Use a label-printing weighing scale with QuPOS: 2x-prefix EAN-13 barcodes, matching item codes, and billing rice, sugar and vegetables with one scan.
About 30 minutes · Applies to: Supermarket
Label-printing scales weigh an item and print a barcode that starts with 2 (the "2x" prefix), followed by an item code and the weight. QuPOS Supermarket reads those barcodes, so the cashier scans the packet and the item and weight are added together.
You will need
- Label-printing weighing scale
- Barcode scanner
- QuPOS with the Supermarket business type
Steps
Choose the Supermarket type
Weighing-scale barcodes are part of the Supermarket business type. Select it in the first-run wizard or later in Settings.
Set loose items to kg or g
For each loose item (rice, sugar, dal, vegetables, sweets), set the unit to kg or g and the selling price per kg.
Match item codes on the scale
In the weighing scale's PLU programming, give each loose item the same item code you use in QuPOS.
Set the scale barcode format
Set the scale to print EAN-13 barcodes with a 2x prefix, the item code and the weight in grams. In Settings → Billing → Weighing scale labels, match the prefix and digit counts (default: 21, then a 5-digit item code, then a 5-digit weight).
Weigh and print a label
Weigh a sample, print the label, and scan it at the billing screen. Check that the right item and weight appear and the amount is correct.
Train the packing staff
Staff weigh and label loose items in the back; the counter only scans, which keeps the queue moving.
Tips and troubleshooting
- Keep the item codes on the scale and in QuPOS in sync whenever you add a new loose item.
- If a scale label scans as an unknown item, check that the item code length set on the scale matches what you entered.
